"He was so fast he could flip a light switch and be in bed before the room got dark!"

Cool Papa Bell, was a legend in black baseball, a lightning fast switch hitter elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. Bell's speed was extraordinary; as Satchel Paige famously quipped, "He was so fast he could flip a light switch and be in bed before the room got dark!" Muhammed Ali later used that quote to described himself. Like many of his Negro colleagues, Bell never competed against white players in Major League Baseball during his prime. Nevertheless, he was inducted into Cooperstown in 1974.  Baseball stories offer a perspective on American culture that is not found in conventional histories. The arc of justice is long but it does bend to runs scored and batting averages. No matter the player's color or creed.
