"Are memories one's soul, or one's spirit?"

Don't be fooled by this anime's simplistic art style: Kaiba delves deep into philosophical explorations of the importance of memory to identity. In this futuristic world, memories can be transferred between bodies as long as they are stored in memory chips. A boy named Kaiba awakens with no memories, a hole in his chest, and a locket with a picture of a girl inside. In searching for his memories and this girl, Kaiba encounters a cast of colorful characters, each with their own heart-wrenching plights in a world where memory chip technology creates a societal divide. Though it may be only 12 episodes, you'll be left pondering its messages long after watching it through. A wonderful pick for fans of existential media like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain.
