Two girls agree to complete every cliche, rom-com montage-worthy date they can dream up.

Saoirse can't believe in love at first sight or happy endings.  Not after being dumped by her long-time girlfriend, the betrayal of her best friend, and her mother living in a care home with early onset dementia - a condition that Saoirse will likely inherit herself.

But a chance encounter at an end-of-term party makes Saoirse want to break her rules of no relationships for a girl with a sense of mischief and a passion for rom-coms.  Ruby proposes a loophole: They don't need true love to have a summer of fun.  They will complete every cliché, rom-com montage-worthy date and then end the relationship come fall.  It's perfect...if they weren't forgetting one thing about the Falling in Love Montage: when it's over, the characters actually fall in love...for real.

Beautifully read by narrator Alana Kerr Collins, filled with Irish and British accents so lovely it's like a dream.  The writing is so fresh, and Saoirse is sassy and relatable.

What I loved most about this LGBTQ+ book was that the main conflict wasn't a coming-out story or an identity crisis (don't get me wrong - books that do this are so important and we need more of them).  The main conflict was something that didn't have to do with Saoirse being a lesbian at all.  It was the relationship itself and how Saoirse, as a person, handled her anxiety over getting into another relationship when she's worried it's pointless if she'll eventually forget it all by inheriting her mother's dementia.  And how she deals with accidentally falling in love when she promised herself she wouldn't.

I also loved the conversation about how nearly all rom-coms involve a straight couple and how many gay movies end it tragedy.  It's powerful and inspiring that the characters take it upon themselves to go through all the cliché Falling in Love Montage dates: from karaoke to canoeing to movie nights.

This book is gay as heck, and we need more books like this.
