A Royal Friendship Revealed as a True Jewel of the Crown

This movie offers an interesting look into the last years of the reign of Queen Victoria, based on the real-life story taken from diaries and based on the book by Shrabani Basu, called Victoria & Abdul, the true story of the queen's closest confidant.

The story takes place when the usual changes of older age has made the Queen's daily duties more difficult both physically and mentally, as years of ruling has taken its toll on her health and general interest in the routines of running a country. As an intelligent and long-running ruler of a major country in the late 1800s it’s not surprising she raises many eye brows at her subsequent change in attitude inspired by her new friendship.

It’s a lighthearted yet sensitive look into the relationship that develops between the Empress and her newly appointed Indian Muslim servant that spans several years. He becomes her confident as a kind and attentive teacher who opens her mind and eyes to understanding not only the gems of his country’s culture but also to appreciating life through the sharing of his wise viewpoints. A mix of delightful comedic moments interspersed among moments touching upon more serious topics of classism and discrimination makes this interesting and historical glimpse into the life of the Queen worthwhile to watch, showing the strength in the bonds of friendship despite differences in cultures, class, age, politics and public opinion. If you are a Judi Dench fan, this movie will not disappoint, she is perfection!  And Ali Fazal's performance as Abdul Karim is notably moving and humorous. What a gem of a movie this is!
