The Book of Salt follows Binh, a gay Vietnamese man, who works as a cook in the Parisian home of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. I loved the mouth-watering descriptions of food and the way that cooking is a language unto itself for Binh, who speaks little French. The novel doesn't show away from Binh's bitterness in a way I found refreshing.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in immigrant narratives and a unique take on familiar literary figures.
