As you read this book, you could end up angry but hopefully, you won’t be apathetic or indifferent.

Sarah-Mary is a 15-year old white girl from Missouri. She is opinionated, learns pretty much everything from the news media and sees phrases like “go back to your own country” as inoffensive and harmless. News of Muslims and other immigrants being unjustly placed in detention centers is of no great consequence to her. She doesn’t know anyone from any ethnic group until a strange incident has her making a promise to her younger brother to help an immigrant. Sarah-Mary finds herself helping an unknown Muslim woman avoid internment and escape to Canada. At the onset, their relationship is strained. Their trek is filled with perils and misunderstandings, but each exploit gets them closer to Canada and closer to understanding each other. Sarah-Mary’s initial promise to help Sadaf only as a favor to her brother slowly transforms her fear, ignorance and misperceptions about what it means to have an American Heart. The author points out that “Fear is the quickest path to obedience.” As you read this book, you could end up angry but hopefully, you won’t be apathetic or indifferent.
