A novel within a novel - a perfect pairing of realistic fiction and horror.

I normally don't enjoy stories with two different narrators, bouncing back and forth between chapters, but Afterworlds is an exception. With two different narrators as well as two different readers, this book comes to life. I found myself getting equally upset whenever it was the next character's turn to have a chapter because I was so enthralled in each of the two different stories being told. I didn't want them to stop! Darcy is putting college on hold in order to finish her teen novel. Along they way, she faces criticism, living on her own in New York, falling in love with someone unexpected, and learning to trust herself and those around her. Lizzie is the protagonist of Darcy's novel and because she survives a terrorist attack, she can visit the "Afterworld" - a place between the living and the dead. She learns new truths, seeks justice, falls in love with a god of death, and has her world turned inside out. Beautifully written and strategically composed with realistic and complex characters, Scott Westerfeld creates not one, but two worlds I longed to be in.
