A harrowing chorus of survivors narrates a ripped-from-the-headlines story of faith and betrayal

The true story: in 2011, seven members of a reclusive Mennonite community in Bolivia were imprisoned for raping over 100 women. For years they had drugged their family, friends, and neighbors, assaulting them at night and then claiming that the rapes were the visitations of demons and delusions.

In Toews's telling, while the rapists are being held and the remaining men of the community have gone to post bail, the women gather, and they talk. Over the course of two days, they must make a decision: do they stay and do nothing, flee, or fight back? This short, searing novel is narrated by their one male ally, who documents the minutes of this civil, patient, wise discussion because he alone is literate. It's a hard and important read, similar to The Handmaid's Tale, if more frightening for the fact that it has already happened, and its world is our own.
