A fun, thought-provoking read about animal behavior

It doesn't take too much listening to realize the answer to the title of this book is 'definitely not.' At least not yet. In order to study animal ethology (behavior), one needs to understand their 'Umwelt', or "surrounding world," before one can even begin to interpret their behavior. De Waal does a great job of this by discussing their environments, social structures, and life histories. This book covers many different animals, from primates to dolphins to wasps. (Did you know some wasps can recognize other individual wasp's faces?). There is a good mix of science, case studies, and even de Waal's fascinating anecdotal observations. His examples are absolutely fascinating and the science isn't so dry that you'll tune it out. I found myself sitting in the driveway a little longer, just to get a few more minutes of listening in.
