Harriet Tubman shows us how to stand up to bullies

This sassy and sprightly collective biography presents 25 women from around the world as role models for pre-teens.  From Cleopatra (born c. 69 BCE) to Malala Yousafzai (born 1997), a satisflyingly long swath of history is covered.  Also, it’s good to see women represented who aren’t often included in books such as this –  for instance, Elena Piscopia, the first woman in history to earn a PhD. (Philosophy, University of Padua, 1678)

In each woman’s profile, the author poses a hypothetical problem that might face a modern tween, then imagines how her subject might solve it.  So, for example, we have Zaha Hadid offering advice on peer pressure, Ada Lovelace empathizing about the trials of parental divorce, and mountain climber Junko Tabei recommending persistence in facing extracurricular challenges.

Fun for all.
