African American history from Jamestown to Ferguson and everywhere in between

The names Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, and Oprah Winfrey are familiar to most school-aged children in America – and deservedly so.  But how many kids have heard about A. Philip Randolph?  Or Fannie Lou Hamer?  How about the Harlem Renaissance, or the East St. Louis Massacre of 1917?  If not, this is an excellent book to check out, because it answers those questions and many more besides.

With its big, inviting format, this book welcomes browsing and is filled with interesting facts from cover to cover.  For example, I learned that Peace In the Valley was composed by blues musician Thomas Dorsey, who is considered the father of black gospel music.

Great for Black History Month or any other time of the year.
