De La Soul have always been the group that have made hip hop on their own terms.  With this album they were able to take that freedom even farther by appealing to the fans for funding.  The result is a rich album that uses live instruments rather than sampling and, as per every De La album, takes the listener far beyond what one would expect from a typical Hip Hop album.
