Fortune's Pawn

Romance is the last thing security officer Devi Morris wants when she joins the crew of the trouble-prone space freighter Glorious Fool.  She’s looking for combat experience to add to her already robust resume that will help get her into the Devastators, a legendary squad of armored shock troops.  But Devi’s attraction to a dreamy but mysterious fellow crew member complicates those plans and puts her in more danger than ever.

 

Devi is, at times, an unreliable narrator, and she’s a delightfully flawed protagonist: geeked-out and braggy about the capabilities of her military hardware, blindly ambitious in her mercenary career, and not particularly interested in cultivating interpersonal relationships.  Still, she’s fairly likeable and it’s fun to watch her don the Lady Gray – her pet name for her armor - and see what trouble she gets into. 

 

This book – the first in a series of three - has plenty of shoot-‘em-up action and would be a good choice for readers who enjoy the military science fiction of Eric Flint, John Ringo, or Tanya Huff.
