A lovely, haunting memoir-on-the-side that merges natural history and terrible grief

Helen MacDonald’s memoir thinks it’s a book about falconry. Or a natural history of goshawks in England. Or a cultural history about aviators in World War II. Or a biography of T.H. White, author of The Goshawk and The Once and Future King and a deeply neurotic closeted gay sadist.

It’s somehow all of these at once, and none of them. The heart of the book, the one MacDonald can’t let herself look at head-on, is her father’s sudden death. In her year of grief, she trains a goshawk named Mabel, writes a book about all of the above, and falls quietly into a raptorial madness. This sideways-looking, cautious book does everything that memoir should, and Helen MacDonald’s lovely voice only adds to the reading experience.
