A hidden mural, an intergenerational mystery, and an assassination attempt in 1939 New York

In Shaprio’s newest, a crash course in modern art history is wrapped in an intergenerational mystery. Contemporary art historian Danielle is appraising newly discovered Abstract Expressionist paintings by the likes of Mark Rothko and Lee Krasner, when she discovers diced-up fragments of a canvas attached to the backs of the paintings. They emerge as puzzle pieces of a mural, one which Danielle believes may have been painted by her aunt Alizee, a forgotten artist of the era who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. But why would her work have been hidden like this, and what might the mural have to do with her fate?

In alternating chapters, Shapiro whisks us between the present day and 1939, when Alizee was working as a muralist with the Works Progress Administration, befriending Eleanor Roosevelt, and developing a political consciousness while her Jewish family was desperately trying to leave Europe for America during the terrifying rise of the Third Reich.
