Terrific multi-voiced narration will suck you into the minds of these beautifully human characters

Ali Smith might be the kindest writer I know. I've never met her, but her multi-voiced novels are full of the warmest, most hopeful vision of humanity. Hotel World has half a dozen narrators, most of them barely acquaintances, all of them having worked at, or spent time inside, a hotel in northern England. One is a ghost: a teenage girl who died suddenly while working in the hotel. Through the distinct voices of the other narrators, we learn her story: how it ended, and how it has affected the world around her.
Smith's stream-of-consciousness style takes a moment to adjust to, as in all of her books. She's the most accessible, fun, and engaging of experimental writers, if you ask me. In this audiobook performance by Helen Lederer, each narrator has a distinct (but not over-the-top) accent and voice, which makes for a terrifically immersive listening experience: you'll feel like you've been sucked right into the minds of each of these painfully, beautifully human characters.
