A gorgeous too-young-for-a-coming-of-age graphic novel about friendship and family.

Cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki (Skim) have collaborated on another phenomenal teen graphic novel. The two friends in This One Summer are too young for a proper coming-of-age, but they’re just mature enough to recognize that the older teenagers living near their beachside cabins are going through that harrowing rite of passage. Mariko Tamaki’s writing is nostalgic: it’s hard to hear Rose and Windy’s conversations without being forcefully plunged back into the bad old days of early adolescence. But she’s never sentimental in her treatment of those years: kids can be as cruel and thoughtless as the rest of us, and these girls are no different. There’s family drama and offstage tragedy and Jillian Tamaki’s beautiful monochromatic illustration to flesh out the story, but the heart of it lies in the inner lives of preteen girls. This One Summer will appeal to older teenagers, but is just as suited to adult readers.
