The Hollow Crown: Richard II

Ben Whishaw is the perfect Richard II, a camp and petulant man-child of a king.

Ben Whishaw doesn’t look much like a leading man, but he’s nearly perfect in every role I’ve seen him in (like The Hour and Bright Star). His portrayal of Shakespeare’s King Richard II is perfection itself: he’s insecure and waifish; a camp and petulant man-child of a king. And yet he is riveting, a pathetic and tragic figure caught at a pivotal moment in England’s history.

Other standout performances from Rory Kinnear, David Morrissey, David Suchet, and, of course, Sir Patrick Stewart make this beautifully cinematic adaptation well worth your attention.
