Charming, educational, and appropriate for all ages and all kinds of families

Cory Silverberg’s What Makes a Baby strikes a fine balance: it tackles a delicate subject for the youngest possible audience, while remaining factual and evenhanded, and still manages to be charming and entertaining, with bright, playful illustrations that will hold the attention of toddlers.

What Makes a Baby takes a scientific approach explaining where babies come from: there are no confusing euphemisms here, though it does use a lovely metaphor for DNA that is perfectly intuitive for children. Concepts are explained generally enough that the book can be a simple story for a 2-year old, or a jumping-off point into a more in-depth conversation for older children. What Makes a Baby uses gender neutral language throughout (as in: “Not all bodies have eggs in them. Some do, and some do not.”), making it appropriate for families of all kinds and configurations. Single parents, adoptive parents, same-sex parents, transgender parents, and yes, heterosexual cisgender married parents, will all be able to present this book to their young child as their own family’s creation story.
