high-concept, ecstatically weird pop

This is Janelle Monae's third concept album (after the Metropolis EP and her album The ArchAndroid) in her sonic chronicle of Cyndi Mayweather, a rogue android on the run from bounty hunters. If that sounds weird, well, it is. But if you find such high-concept werdness enjoyable than you owe it to yourself to check out this album along with the rest of Monae's work.

A commenter on MetaFilter once said that Monae's schtick was "like James Brown ate German Expressionism," which is apt enough. She hasn't abandoned that routine altogether (and I for one am glad of that), but in her collaborations on her new album with artists like Prince, Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding and others, she's expanded the breadth of her musical reach. An absolute must-listen.
