Turn your personal demons into art.

There are less than twenty stories here but there might easily be one hundred personal demons in them. Ms. Barry has really captured something true about childhood in this book. Friends, family, friends’parents, school, loneliness, dreaming, the weirdness of smells and dark scary things she never talks about are all in here. Her stories about playing games with the other kids in the neighborhood were wonderful and made me remember running home after dark in the cold. It was vividly sad when she ditched a childhood friend because she was too young. Later demons were bad boyfriends, acid trips and some grown up stuff. Her drawn and brushed and collaged and packed in art and speech bubbles were endlessly absorbing. The book was based on an exercise to get the creative juices flowing and I would say it really worked. This is a compelling and emotional read that is worth poring over. Even if you never read graphic novels you should give this one a look.
