“I often wondered if Dad met Mom by mistakenly wandering into a poetry reading thinking it was a Parliament concert” ~ Mishna Wolff

I’m Down by Mishna Wolff

Wolff’s memoir of her early childhood as part of the only white family in an all black ghetto of Seattle is both funny and heartbreakingly poignant. Raised by a father who couldn’t be told he wasn’t black, she craved his attention but couldn’t seem to satisfy him in his quest to make her “down.” Caught between the haves and have-nots, totally lacking in rhythm and smart to boot, she finds herself continually at odds in her family, at school and in the neighborhood. Wolff is a funny and insightful storyteller as she tries to find herself and come to terms with her relationship with her father.
