Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
A captivating story of survival during World War II
Lina has lived a life which revolved around her art. Her family has been supportive, and she has a bright future. One cold night in 1939, everything she has known is ripped away from her. Lina and her family become victims of Stalin’s brutal Baltic purges, and are forced to leave their home in the dead of night for deportation to a forced labor camp in Siberia. Her father is separated from them, and Lina, her mother, and her younger brother are sent to work in some of the most brutal conditions known to man. Lina clings to the desperate hope that her father will come to rescue them. Surreptitiously sending her art out amongst other prisoners, she hopes her father will see it and be able to find them. Throughout the long, cold arctic winter, Lina and her family struggle simply to survive the endless drudgery of their life in a forced labor camp. She knows holding onto hope is the only way they will survive, but how can one anticipate dawn when the darkness has no end in sight?
