Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

A modern-day ghost story by the author of The Time Traveler’s Wife

Elspeth Noblin is 44 when she dies of cancer. Instead of leaving her estate to her younger lover, Robert (who lives in the same apartment building), she leaves it to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina, the daughters of her own estranged twin sister. As a condition in her will, Elspeth insists that the 21-year old girls must live in her London apartment for one year. When the girls move in they soon realize that Elspeth’s ghost is haunting the apartment, growing more visible and powerful every day. Soon she is able to communicate with the girls, and with Robert, with whom she is determined to reunite. Her Fearful Symmetry takes place near London’s Highgate Cemetery, which plays a starring role in the story. Niffenegger (author of The Time Traveler's Wife)  populates the book with wonderfully real characters I couldn’t help but love. While I felt that the ending wasn’t entirely believable, I still recommend this book because Niffenegger has such a talent for drawing us into the emotional worlds she creates for her characters.
