Mainspring by Jay Lake
The clock at the heart of the world is failing…
Hethor Jacques is a promising young clockmakers apprentice secure in his future and comfortable in his lot. That is, until the Angel Gabriel charges him with a mission to wind the clock at the heart of the world. Compelled to heed the summons he begins a dangerous journey to the end of the world and then down deep into the dark. This is a great story though I repeatedly found myself outraged on Hethor behalf for the trials he has to face. Fans of Steampunk will enjoy the clockwork precision of Lake’s novel which approaches the Humanist and Clockmaker theories of religion head on. Readers who enjoyed Thunderer by Felix Gilman, titles by China Miéville, or Jeff VanderMeer might check this out. And if you enjoy it check out the sequel Escapement.
