Manhood for Amateurs by Michael Chabon
Witty and moving reflections of a father, brother and son.
This is a book of previously published autobiographical essays from Pulitzer prize-winning author Michael Chabon. The topics range from a reflection on the effect his divorce had on his father-in law in “The Hand on My Shoulder,” to the birth of his first child in “The Story of Our Story,” his wish for geeky children in “The Amateur Family,” to his need to break out and use a man purse in “I Feel Good About My Murse.” The essays are witty and moving, and the writing outstanding. The essays remind me very much of real conversations I’ve had with family and friends. It was named to TIME Magazine's Best Books of 2009. Fan’s of Chabon’s fiction should check this out as well as readers of David Sedaris or Neil Gaiman’s essays (so far uncollected).
