A non-fiction adventure story about a Victorian explorer searching for El Dorado

The Lost City of Z by David Grann

The Lost City of Z by David Grann

The Lost City of Z is fiction that reads like non-fiction, very much in the same category as Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air and Into the Wild. It explores the mysterious disappearance of Percy Fawcett, one of the last great Victorian explorers, who vanished wih his son and a friend in the Amazon rainforest in 1925. Fawcett was hunting for El Dorado, which he called the Lost City of Z. He was convinced, in defiance of all the anthropological wisdom of the day, that the Amazon had once been home to an advanced civilization. In the 80 years after his death, over 100 explorers, both amateur and professional, have lost their lives searching for either Fawcett or his remains. The author also becomes obsessed with the mystery of Fawcett’s disappearance, and the book weaves Grann’s present-day Amazon expedition seamlessly with the stories of Fawcett’s own adventures. A faced paced, thrilling read.
