Ex-MP Jack Reacher is a man whose past has disappeared – at least on paper – since his covert work for the CIA. That past makes him a perfect recruit for the head of the Secret Security detail responsible for the newly-elected Vice President Senator Brook Armstrong. She wants to secretly test the systems set in place, because someone is sending death threats to Armstrong (a fact she doesn’t share with Reacher).
Jack finds great holes in the security and an old mystery underneath the VP-elect’s “All-American boy” image. When other men sharing Armstrong’s name and physical characteristics are murdered, the perceived weight of the threats ratchets up and Reacher is kept on board to track the killer. Jack Reacher is one of the more intriguing, intelligent protagonists introduced in the mystery genre in the last five years and Child crafts page-turning, twisty plots filled with non-stop action. Killing Floor is the first title in the series of six featuring Reacher. The series does not have to be read in sequence.
