Digging to America
by Anne Tyler
The two families waiting at the airport for the Korean girls they were adopting had little in common and their differences were reflected in the ways they chose to raise their daughters. Children of Iranian-American parents still closely linked to the immigrant community, the Yazdans are eager to assimilate daughter Susan into American culture. Bitsy and Brad Donaldson, in direct contrast, name their daughter Jin-Ho and do everything they can to make her aware of her Korean heritage. The chance meeting of the families leads to an enduring friendship in a well-crafted tale that looks at the multi-cultural nature of American society with humor and insight.
