Carved in Bone
by Jefferson Bass
Some mysteries are defined not by the puzzle in their plot, but by memorable settings and characters. Co-author (with journalist Jon Jefferson) William Bass is the forensic anthropologist responsible for establishing the University of Tennessee’s “postmortem decay research lab”, a real facility known as the Body Farm.
His expertise is apparent in the rich forensic detail which under lays this story of a young pregnant woman whose body is found mummified in a cave. The hardscrabble life of rural eastern Tennessee, complete with generational feuds over the Civil War, colorfully emerges as Dr. Bill Brockton helps the local sheriff investigate the corpse’s identity. Carved will have particular appeal for fans of CSI and Patricia Cornwell.
