Slow Love by Dominique Browning
It was not the life she would have chosen, but she found great rewards therein.
When Browning was divorced, she worked through her grief by building a
new home and chronicled the process, both emotional and physical, in a
beloved memoir, Around the House and in the Garden. When the wall in
her garden collapsed, this long-time editor of House & Garden
magazine worked through her newly empty nest by redesigning her garden.
And when Conde Nast unexpectedly shut down her magazine with four days
notice, she turned once again to writing – eventually. First she
wallowed, lost without the structure and meaning she had depended upon
work to give her life. She struggled to identify and focus on those
things which still gave her pleasure and not every experiment went
smoothly. She added fifteen pounds of muffin weight and moved in, and
out, and back into a relationship with a man who still lived with his
wife, even though they had been legally separated for years. On the
other hand, insomnia brought her back to her piano and the beauty of
nature and design remained a strong solace. It was not the life she
would have chosen, but she found great rewards therein.
