Lansing's First Fire

"Today the new dwelling of a Mr. Edgar, near the Capitol, was entirely destroyed by fire, together with the furniture etc.

The dwelling was one of the best on the capitol grounds, and had most been completed. Loss about $400. As there was no water near by, citizens could only look on and see it burn. A subscription paper was immediately started by Hon. J.P.C. Emmons, and circulated among the members and officers of the legislature and departments, and citizens, and some $300 raised and paid over, so the loss will be light."
